There's a hidden trick here: mixing between the "perception" and the"fact": the ship moving at the speed of light will "look" shorter, because of the speed of reflection of light that is approaching its speed, thus the observer will have the "impression" that it is looking smaller and smaller. One another comment: The example of 3 ships moving together at the same speed, and light beam projected from the middle one towards the other two, we shouldn't omit the "direction of light" as compared to the "movement direction of the ships"…that is, light will reach faster the ship that is moving in its direction (the one to the left) and slower the one moving in the opposite direction. So for those who jumped to conclusions about religion from this "Einstein theory"….think again

From what I am understanding the key to someone truly being able to extend their life ('relatively' speaking) by aging slower than us on Earth is by finding a way to travel close to light speed through the universe?

Since it's the speed of light we're talking about, doesn't that mean that the time difference we're talking about isn't really perceivable to the human eye, just a millisecond or two? It just seems kind of odd to say that time slows down when all we are experiencing is lag in the time it takes to see something, right?
