Aspartame is linked to leukemia and lymphoma in new landmark study on humans
(NaturalNews) As few as one diet soda daily may increase the risk for leukemia in men and women, and for multiple myeloma and non-Hodgkin lymphoma in men, according to new results from the longest-ever running study on aspartame as a carcinogen in humans. Importantly, this is the most comprehensive, long-term study ever completed on this topic, so it holds more weight than other past studies which appeared to show no risk. And disturbingly, it may also open the door for further similar findings on other cancers in future studies.
The most thorough study yet on aspartame – Over two million person-years
For this study, researchers prospectively analyzed data from the Nurses’ Health Study and the Health Professionals Follow-Up Study for a 22-year period. A total of 77,218 women and 47,810 men were included in the analysis, for a total of 2,278,396 person-years of data. Apart from sheer size, what makes this study superior to other past studies is the thoroughness with which aspartame intake was assessed. Every two years, participants were given a detailed dietary questionnaire, and their diets were reassessed every four years. Previous studies which found no link to cancer only ever assessed participants’ aspartame intake at one point in time, which could be a major weakness affecting their accuracy.
One diet soda a day increases leukemia, multiple myeloma and non-Hodgkin lymphomas
The combined results of this new study showed that just one 12-fl oz. can (355 ml) of diet soda daily leads to:
- 42 percent higher leukemia risk in men and women (pooled analysis) - 102 percent higher multiple myeloma risk (in men only) - 31 percent higher non-Hodgkin lymphoma risk (in men only)
These results were based on multi-variable relative risk models, all in comparison to participants who drank no diet soda. It is unknown why only men drinking higher amounts of diet soda showed increased risk for multiple myeloma and non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Note that diet soda is the largest dietary source of aspartame(by far) in the U.S. Every year, Americans consume about 5,250 tons of aspartame in total, of which about 86 percent (4,500 tons) is found in diet sodas.
Confirmation of previous high quality research on animals
This new study shows the importance of the quality of research. Most of the past studies showing no link between aspartame and cancer have been criticized for being too short in duration and too inaccurate in assessing long-term aspartame intake. This new study solves both of those issues. The fact that it also shows a positive link to cancer should come as no surprise, because a previous best-in-class research study done on animals (900 rats over their entire natural lifetimes) showed strikingly similar results back in 2006: aspartame significantly increased the risk for lymphomas and leukemia in both males and females. More worrying is the follow on mega-study, which started aspartame exposure of the rats at the fetal stage. Increased lymphoma and leukemia risks were confirmed, and this time the female rats also showed significantly increased breast (mammary) cancer rates. This raises a critical question: will future, high-quality studies uncover links to the other cancers in which aspartame has been implicated (brain, breast, prostate, etc.)?
There is now more reason than ever to completely avoid aspartame in our daily diet. For those who are tempted to go back to sugary sodas as a “healthy” alternative, this study had a surprise finding: men consuming one or more sugar-sweetened sodas daily saw a 66 percent increase in non-Hodgkin lymphoma (even worse than for diet soda). Perhaps the healthiest soda is no soda at all.

If you're going to drink fizzy drinks, don't drink DIET. Aspartame = poison. Check it out for yourself.

And sugar = diabetes. 25.8 million children and adults in the United States—8.3% of the population—have diabetes.
Jan 24, 2013 @ 15:28:16
Nonsense.
Feb 28, 2013 @ 11:17:29
I have a hard time believing that regular unprocessed sugar used in moderation causes diabetes. I am more inclined to believe it's the refinement process.
Feb 28, 2013 @ 12:50:54
Nic Steele, I am one of those 25.8 million, with diabetes. I battle between sugar and artificial sweetener, and have to say, I am, more and more, turning to sugar and higher insulin dosage and more frequent glucose monitoring, avoiding artificial sweeteners. It is a fine line, but basically, diabetics were promised "freedom!!!" with the advent of diet sodas and we thought we could be almost normal. I fear we are not free, instead, addicted to something just as deadly as the sugar we are taught to avoid. It is a no win, but it is our lot. Take comfort in knowing that beer has neither aspartame nor sugar (carbs, yes, glucose, fructose or sucrose, no.)

So I suppose gum with Aspartame is equally as bad. True?
Nov 01, 2012 @ 04:15:48
true.
Jan 24, 2013 @ 15:28:48
True, in that there is no convincing evidence that aspartame is bad for you.

why don't you all just drink fresh fruit juice.. and water.. why drink chemicals? I just don't get it! fill your body with nutrition and stop looking at calories I say…….. why do you think 50% of people are now getting cancer? you are actually lucky if you do not get cancer.. so try to eat and drink as your body intended, as natural as possible…
Nov 01, 2012 @ 10:19:57
Is there a petition against it yet?
Jan 09, 2013 @ 21:56:51
No. Because there's no real evidence to show that it causes cancer. Read the studies and ignore this fear-mongering.

Look at the sources for that article. To continue to run "articles" from Natural News is NOT science at all. It is a stroking of ego masquerading as science. He took 1 study about insanely large amounts of sweetener fed to rats (which was inconclusive), one study about smaller amounts fed to rats (which has yet to be repeated and has been disproven a few times since) and a newer study that afforded the possibility but was ultimately inconclusive about it.
It is NOT science. Apertame may very well be crap and cause all sorts of nastiness, but that has yet to proven. Therefore, NOT science. the real reason not to drink soda pop is because it is a load of seriously empty calories. Educate yourself.
Nov 01, 2012 @ 23:22:01
you pointy-headed know-it-all. try researching further before blowing off every article from Natural News.

My nephew, age 3 was having seizures once a month for 3 months. We realized he had drank diet coke before the first seizure. He had eaten Jello before the second occurrence. Once we realized the common denominator he does not consume anything with aspartame in it and he has gone a year without any seizures. This is a more clear cut case of a bad reaction to the synthetic sweetener.
Nov 15, 2012 @ 20:58:52
Cris Legato Orr Well it is based on science, that is well executed studies that did not overstate or misinterpret their results. This article, however, abuses that research.

Hunter GodParticles Battisto Which is what they call anectdotal evidence. I'm not at all shocked to hear that individuals have issues with aspartame. They have a warning on every bottle of diet soda about it. But that doesn't make it unsafe for the many other people who are more concerned about the REAL threat of diabetes.

Feb 28, 2013 @ 12:40:53
Cris, did you read the FIRST 75% of the article? It was on HUMANS over a 22 year period of time involving almost 100,000 people. THIS WAS NOT THE RAT STUDY!!!! The bottom portion merely correlated the previous RAT STUDY to the CURRENT HUMAN study, showing that the rat study SHOULD NOT BE DISMISSED because it was rats, young, high dosages, etc. The article is ALL about human study. Read carefully, my friend, before you pontificate. 2 MILLION human/years (that's a lot, by the way… just sayin') of research correlating HUMAN cancers in HUMANS. I fear you are mistaken, this IS SCIENCE. Just because you don't like it, doesn't make it invalid.

Aspartame is in the category of excitotoxins. There is substantial researched evidence to prove it is something that anyone should not ingest if one wants to prevent damage to one's health. An outstanding book by Dr. Russell L. Blaylock, "EXCITOTOXNS the taste that kills",where he clearly presents a body evidence proving the negative consequences of using not only aspartame but other excitotoxins such as MSG that under various names in the food supply. Highly recommended

It doesnt take a scientist to know that aspartame is a petroleum bi-product. Petroleum is a carcinogen, plain and simple. Of course, to an image obsesssed society, a product that could help weight loss was the greatest thing in the world, so the oil industry got richer off it.
Jan 24, 2013 @ 02:41:42
Apparently it does. Aspartame is not a petroleum bi-product, it's actually derived from a genetically modified e coli strain. You're probably thinking a Saccharin.

I am a type 1 diabetic, (child onset) that became evident at age 40+. In a word, I'm dying albeit slowly, but I AM dying. In reviewing this article I went to the sources and looked at the actual study results. The rats tested were given aspartame at a very early age and in large doses. It does APPEAR to have an effect on the occurrence of some specific maladies. That said, I'm still dying, yes really, I am an avid user of aspartame simply because the sugar/diabetes will kill me faster and more effectively than this stuff, there is NO doubt that sodas are bad but I don't drink them, I use aspartame in my coffee and tea along with honey.
My point is this, I believe in an after-life, one free of the evils and corruption of this world, we are ALL dying from the day we are born and well honestly I don't want to live forever, I am a happy individual, love my life, wife/family and career. I prefer to live my life as I choose, I do not pander to fear mongering statistical manipulation, I have better things to do… Statistically I STILL have a better chance of dying in a car accident, crossing the street, being murdered, choking on food or being killed by an incompetent doctor, (I was misdiagnosed for 6 yrs with my diabetes by doctors who didn't bother to give me a simple test to determine I had type 1 versus type 2 diabetes)…. Already in my life I have escaped death at least 6 times so I'm going to go back out there and enjoy my life, since today could well be my last I don't want to miss a thing and when my time comes I'm going to move on with NO REGRETS satisfied that I've done the best I can and hopefully smiled, loved and had a positive influence on this world.

Mark, Have you considered using STEVIA, My recommended brand is KAL which does not have an adverse taste. As for the bigger issue of your diabetes, my mother died of complications to her diabetic condition and was taking the nutrisweet type sweeteners and it affected her nervous system in a damaging and sad way. Dr Gabriel Cousens from the Tree of Life Center, Patagonia AZ did a beautiful doc on how to be free of diabetes for good, CALLED "SIMPLY RAW", you owe it to yourself to at least consider the option for real to heal this condition by watching this documentary…..
. If there is life there is HOPE…..

One of the criticism of most of the animal studies is that they fed the aspartamine to animals in powder form. When it was fed to rats in liquid form the number of cancers dramatically increased. Liquid form is the way it is always taken in the human population… suggesting yet again that the devil is in the detail… or that you can design a study not to prove anything if you want to.
Feb 27, 2013 @ 22:20:25
I try to eat as healthy as posible, but I clicked on the "sources" for this NaturalNews article and they say NOTHING like what the article says. I'm not saying aspartame is not harmful, but using these sources to prove your point when they actually don't is bad journalism and bad for your credibility. Please do some fact-checking before republishing rubbish like this.
Feb 28, 2013 @ 17:53:35
It also causes migraines, and a host of other issues. I agree that studies can be skewed, but there is an overwhelming amount of evidence that artificial sweeteners are harmful. Ignore it if you choose, but undoing the damage might not be possible with prolonged use. Choose wisely.
