There has actually been a lot of debate about whether this situation was for real. At the time of her death, Marilyn's personal library was catalogued and it suggests that she had a very pensive side.
We do however have the words of photographer Eve Arnold about how this photo came about:
"We worked on a beach on Long Island. She was visiting Norman Rosten the poet…. I asked her what she was reading when I went to pick her up (I was trying to get an idea of how she spent her time). She said she kept Ulysses in her car and had been reading it for a long time. She said she loved the sound of it and would read it aloud to herself to try to make sense of it — but she found it hard going. She couldn’t read it consecutively. When we stopped at a local playground to photograph she got out the book and started to read while I loaded the film. So, of course, I photographed her. It was always a collaborative effort of photographer and subject where she was concerned — but almost more her input."

I absolutely love the photo of Marilyn Monroe.She just looks like any normal woman enjoying a good book.What I meant by normal is that she wanted a normal life but her life was anything but normal.Did you know she wore between the sizes of 12 to 14 in pants? Nowadays they would be hounding her to get down to a size 4 or less…what a messed up world we live in when people only care about the outside and not what really means something…the heart and mind of a person.
