Shock findings in new GMO study: Rats fed lifetime of GM corn grow horrifying tumors, 70% of females die early
by Mike Adams,
(NaturalNews) Eating genetically modified corn (GM corn) and consuming trace levels of Monsanto’s Roundup chemical fertilizer caused rats to develop horrifying tumors, widespread organ damage, and premature death. That’s the conclusion of a shocking new study that looked at the long-term effects of consuming Monsanto’s genetically modified corn.
The study has been deemed “the most thorough research ever published into the health effects of GM food crops and the herbicide Roundup on rats.” News of the horrifying findings is spreading like wildfire across the internet, with even the mainstream media seemingly in shock over the photos of rats with multiple grotesque tumors… tumors so large the rats even had difficulty breathing in some cases. GMOs may be the new thalidomide.
“Monsanto Roundup weedkiller and GM maize implicated in ‘shocking’ new cancer study” wrote The Grocery, a popular UK publication. (http://www.thegrocer.co.uk/topics/technology-and-supply-chain/monsant…)
It reported, “Scientists found that rats exposed to even the smallest amounts, developed mammary tumors and severe liver and kidney damage as early as four months in males, and seven months for females.”
The Daily Mail reported, “Fresh row over GM foods as French study claims rats fed the controversial crops suffered tumors.” (http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-2205509/Fresh-fears-GM…)
It goes on to say: “The animals on the GM diet suffered mammary tumors, as well as severe liver and kidney damage. The researchers said 50 percent of males and 70 percent of females died prematurely, compared with only 30 percent and 20 percent in the control group.”

The study, led by Gilles-Eric Seralini of the University of Caen, was the first ever study to examine the long-term (lifetime) effects of eating GMOs. You may find yourself thinking it is absolutely astonishing that no such studies were ever conducted before GM corn was approved for widespread use by the USDA and FDA, but such is the power of corporate lobbying and corporate greed.
The study was published in The Food & Chemical Toxicology Journal and was just presented at a news conference in London.

Findings from the study
Here are some of the shocking findings from the study:
• Up to 50% of males and 70% of females suffered premature death.
• Rats that drank trace amounts of Roundup (at levels legally allowed in the water supply) had a 200% to 300% increase in large tumors.
• Rats fed GM corn and traces of Roundup suffered severe organ damage including liver damage and kidney damage.
• The study fed these rats NK603, the Monsanto variety of GM corn that’s grown across North America and widely fed to animals and humans. This is the same corn that’s in your corn-based breakfast cereal, corn tortillas and corn snack chips.
The Daily Mail is reporting on some of the reaction to the findings:
France’s Jose Bove, vice-chairman of the European Parliament’s commission for agriculture and known as a fierce opponent of GM, called for an immediate suspension of all EU cultivation and import authorisations of GM crops. ‘This study finally shows we are right and that it is urgent to quickly review all GMO evaluation processes,’ he said in a statement. ‘National and European food security agencies must carry out new studies financed by public funding to guarantee healthy food for European consumers.’ (http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-2205509/Fresh-fears-GM…)
Read the study abstract
The study is entitled, “A Comparison of the Effects of Three GM Corn Varieties on Mammalian Health.” Read the abstract here:
http://www.biolsci.org/v05p0706.htm
That abstract include this text. Note: “hepatorenal toxicity” means toxic to the liver.
Our analysis clearly reveals for the 3 GMOs new side effects linked with GM maize consumption, which were sex- and often dose-dependent. Effects were mostly associated with the kidney and liver, the dietary detoxifying organs, although different between the 3 GMOs. Other effects were also noticed in the heart, adrenal glands, spleen and haematopoietic system. We conclude that these data highlight signs of hepatorenal toxicity, possibly due to the new pesticides specific to each GM corn. In addition, unintended direct or indirect metabolic consequences of the genetic modification cannot be excluded.
Here are some quotes from the researchers:
“This research shows an extraordinary number of tumors developing earlier and more aggressively – particularly in female animals. I am shocked by the extreme negative health impacts.” – Dr Michael Antoniou, molecular biologist, King’s College London.
“We can expect that the consumption of GM maize and the herbicide Roundup, impacts seriously on human health.” – Dr Antoniou.
“This is the first time that a long-term animal feeding trial has examined the impact of feeding GM corn or the herbicide Roundup, or a combination of both and the results are extremely serious. In the male rats, there was liver and kidney disorders, including tumors and even more worryingly, in the female rats, there were mammary tumors at a level which is extremely concerning; up to 80 percent of the female rats had mammary tumors by the end of the trial.” – Patrick Holden, Director, Sustainable Food Trust.

Nice one. Now since many country's food are Genetically Modified, why aren't we dying of cancer?
Jan 10, 2013 @ 13:24:15
well, rats are not the same as humans, but due to research ethics scientists can't use humans as test subjects .___.
Jan 10, 2013 @ 13:39:04
because we havent been eating a life time of GM corn, nor do we solely rely on one source of food. its more of a massive potential risk derp
Jan 10, 2013 @ 13:55:45
GM crops havent been around that long i believe. these rats were fed a life time's worth. if this is also true for humans itll be decades i think before we start seeing the human long term effects
Jan 10, 2013 @ 13:57:22
We ARE dying of cancer. Unless you live in a cancer-free world? I'd like to move there.
Jan 10, 2013 @ 13:58:49
Do you have any idea how many people die of cancer every year? And besides that, do you eat "only" GM corn like those rats did? Don't think so. But the threat is real. If things keep going as it is soon enough we'll only have GM food to eat and that don't seem to be a good idea. It's profitable though.
Jan 10, 2013 @ 15:03:18
are those same rats which are prone to tumors no matter what food you are feeding them?
Jan 10, 2013 @ 15:08:50
WTF? we ARE dying of cancer. pay attention! what an absolute alice in wonderland posting by chen………… do you REALLY not know how common cancer has become?
Jan 10, 2013 @ 18:54:36
We are…..
Jan 10, 2013 @ 23:48:43
uh, look around, dude. we ARE dying of cancer(s)!
Jan 11, 2013 @ 00:00:03
Velibor – the scientists had two multiple groups of rats, of the same type, so the control group (which had far fewer cancers) and the groups that had the high levels of cancers were the same, so i don't think there's evidence that they are "prone to tumors no matter what food you are feeding them".

Cancer rates are up. People are dying..
Jan 12, 2013 @ 05:50:30
WE ARE!!
Jan 12, 2013 @ 10:19:12
Firstly, more and more people are eating GMO food every year. However, cancer rates have been declining every year. Secondly, this strain of rats is very, very, very prone to tumours from unrestricted food intake. These rats are genetically predisposed to form tumours. Thirdly, why havent any past tests reach this same conclusion? Furthermore, this research team has not provided any data on the growth rate of rats, amount of food intake and any other important factors. We cannot jump to conclusions quickly and we have to wait for more tests.

We need labeling of gmo's in the US.
Jan 10, 2013 @ 15:42:19
We just need to outlaw GMOs here like they are beginning to do in other places in the world…that would solve the problem…we wouldn't need labeling! Haha!
Jan 12, 2013 @ 03:01:02
everywhere. monsanto pollutes everywhere the go, every market they touch.
Jan 13, 2013 @ 00:32:51
Labeling is a distraction to banning Monsanto and GMO foods! People don't realize how toxic this stuff is, and how cross pollination can obliterate entire seed stock. Bees have been dying out in droves, they pollinate 90% of all plants. We must ban GMO products, because they are so difficult to recall. Acting towards a slow labeling is not effective enough, it wouldn't stop the damage. Why? Because GMOs are subsidized!! Its what makes buying them SEEM cheaper, convenient, however, the use of pesticides along with them getting into water sources, and cost of clean up coming from tax payers money makes it many more times more expensive. What a poisonous tick! If we spend all our means toward labeling, we would have already lost the battle. There needs to be a ban because the negative impact CANNOT coexist, it seeps, or be controlled. The best thing we could do after a ban, is honestly burning the crop to create biochar, which acts as a great foundation for organic crops
Jan 13, 2013 @ 03:18:09
Yes, fuck labeling. Kill the altered produce that still exists, as well as the genes that think modifying our food sources is ok. Destroy the problem completely..
Jan 18, 2013 @ 06:25:11
there are labels unfortunately its only on the products which choose to show that they arnt GMO's
Jan 31, 2013 @ 07:44:36
Ashley Lauren McAdams I think you don't understand. There should be obligatory labeling, i.e. it should be a MUST to label, if a product is or contains GMO.

I suggest looking into building your OWN aquaponics system, implementing the spray of aeroponics, this saves 95% more water than in-ground gardening + you grow your own protein, fish. I suggest you use hempstone for pipes. There are structures that have lasted well over300 years made from this product, no chemicals in your pipes, damaging your supply. Or made of kenaf. Both are fireproof, have great resistance, flexibility, 0 chemicals (just lime and compression )and are exceedingly durable, pvc free. You can grow your own duck weed/chlorella to feed your fish very quickly as well. Look into biochar and its results when watered with microorganisms beneficial to plant health. More power to you!
Jan 13, 2013 @ 03:19:28
You rock!..
Jan 26, 2013 @ 22:37:51
Please pay extremely good attention to the seeds… Monsanto's top target – seeds.
Feb 04, 2013 @ 04:24:13
Be careful, all strains of tomatoes you buy to grow at home are genetically modified, except for heirloom. A lot of seeds of other veggies are too. Always check the source, even when growing at home

Jan 11, 2013 @ 01:05:03
From what I see of this study the results are inconclusive. Before people condemn GMO's they should ask the question as to it the effects of GMO's alone. Doesn't the consumption of Monsanto’s Roundup chemical fertilizer alone raise any red flags? Why weren't these tested separately?
Jan 11, 2013 @ 01:07:08
Good lord…it's a wonder this info is allowed to be published…
Jan 11, 2013 @ 05:01:33
They did. Open your eyes. One study with each separate, then one study with GM and Roundup together. Nothing good about GMO's. Wake up. The tests were conclusive..
Jan 11, 2013 @ 06:17:16
I mean. The studies are going to be inconclusive.
For me, it does seem more alarming how GMOs are patented. Seems to me the precedent for GMO patent law is: "These genomes are patented, if we find cross-breeding with your fields that demonstrate a certain amount of this genome, you are violating our patent." Regardless of how the cross-fertilization occurred.
On another point I'd be less willing to stand behind: it does seem predictable that studies on GMOs would be inconclusive… First, it seems that the whole issue would revolve around the diet of an individual in general, and what proportions of that diet could be directly tied to a specific GMO… and also a big factor of Time, since we'd have to draw a point in a longitudinal study after which we consider the effects null…
Also. Experimentation and the nature of this experimental system in general… What's that about rats renal systems being dissimilar enough from humans that all of our saccharine/cancer studies are unfounded to begin with? I feel a similar enough situation here, such that no rat studies could ever be considered *conclusive* regarding human health…
Jan 12, 2013 @ 22:18:30
Stephen: I think you need to look at the original study. http://www.biolsci.org/v05p0706.htm First of all, this particular study, involves 3 strains of GM corn tied to toxic substances. Two of them. MON 810 and MON 863 are engineered to synthesize two different Bt toxins used as insecticides. The other, NK 603 has been modified to be tolerant to the broad spectrum herbicide Roundup and thus contains residues of this formulation. Based on this, it's not hard to believe adverse effects are observed. My problem with GMO opponents is the objection is all GMO products based on some unfounded "tampering with nature fear". For example, GMO's produced to extend shelf life, or speed up growth, etc… basically GMO's not associated with toxins. For a further critique of the study check out: http://learningenglish.voanews.com/content/scientists-dispute-study-of-genetically-modified-corn/1537101.html GMO research must be based on science, not hysteria.

Jan 13, 2013 @ 17:48:12
This study is littered with errors. Do you really believe every report that has the words "Shocking" or "Horrifying" in the title? The strain of rat used is specifically bred for medical research and over half of the females spontaneously grow tumors even when they eat plain ratfood. The control rats who died were removed from the study…hello? Critical thinking? This study can easily be reproduced in any lab. If there is any truth to it, it will be all over the place soon.
Jan 31, 2013 @ 07:49:50
You mean, MODIFIED tomato with OCTOPUS GENE inserted doesnt affect your cells, after you eat it? Why do eat at all? I wonder
Feb 02, 2013 @ 18:14:38
I don't know if it does or does not affect anything. I do know that improperly done experiments will never correctly answer the question. Many people assume that heavy objects drop faster than lighter objects. Proper experimentation shows the truth. Improper experimentation just confirms assumptions. Take your pick.

so did the study acually find what happened to rats who JUST ate the gm corn and drank normal water?
because this article states the study found nothing in relation to just eating the corn. only through them drinking water with trace amounts of round-up? or did I read it incorrectly?
Apr 11, 2013 @ 10:50:19
my apologies is does say. but it dosnt specify as to what combination of testing produced what results. for all we know, the rats fed the gm corn only where fine and its the just the rats with round-up water who had tumours.
this is the problem with journalist articles talking about studies. nothings accurate.

One thing to remember is Rats are prone to having tumors to begin with. And when they start growing they will continue till the rat dies or you do the humane thing and have them put down. I am not saying this GMO crap is good, I just wanted to say that Rats and Tumors are almost a packaged deal. Rats make greats pets. I have raised several and they are very trainable, but I NEVER let the tumors get so out of hand like that. I had to have our vet put a couple of them down because of the tumors. And NO I don't want that crap on my food either.

GMO's should be consumed in moderation or not at all. I would like to see this study repeated. One study using GMO corn and one study using "trace amounts" of Roundup. Otherwise, it is hard to say what caused the body malfunctions in the rats; the GMO corn or the Roundup. It it likely, both have damaging affects, but I would like to see which one creates what kind of damage.
Apr 29, 2013 @ 17:10:56
and this is why Monsanto got congress to protect them from any lawsuits that would ask for damages as a result to damage caused by their product.
Apr 29, 2013 @ 17:13:29
how about getting conclusive results to these experiments BEFORE feeding it to an unsuspecting public? basically we are the lab rats, and the only achnowledgement of danger from Monsanto is to get a law passed protecting them from any lawsuits
