Yup, it's funny to see people recording concerts on their smart phones. It's like watching the live show through the screen to make sure the picture is 'steady' instead of seeing it for what it is... and why? So, you can have it stored for 'later' to show you friends, even though the sound or the video itself will not do justice to what it was really like. When people show me recordings of concerts they always add a "well it sounded way better in person."

Sad but true the number of times I see this in society is unreal. Everyone is plugged in at all times, seems the more technology we create to keep us mute connected is the very thing that seperates us and cause us to be completley disconnected to life and the aspect of living.

Like Bob says below, it's like an addiction (personally I prefer chocolate) but it's self-inflicted. Each person has responsibility and accountability. I deliberately turn mine off every so often during work in order to get things done. Most of us are not brain surgeons where someone will die if we don't answer straight away. Just saying! :-)

Darrell, you have entirely missed Sharon's point. Sharon asserts that we each have responsibility and accountability- taking responsibility is the opposite of making excuses. She advocates turning her phone off in order to focus on what she is doing. "Turn off and tune into the real world." You are making the same point.

You turn it off periodically at work to get things done...I'm pretty sure your employer would want you to turn it off for the whole time you are being paid to do your job. Sharon Ditchburn "They" are the powers at be, and yes they lie - the lie being that we could not stay connected without all these gadgets, when in fact, as quite rightfully pointed out by many above, it has the staggeringly obvious but cleverly disguised opposite effect. "They" have devious ways of making you believe you act of your own volition. You just watch in a few years when "they" want to start inserting chips into people. "They" will SELL them to you, claiming it's (very enthused voiceover here) the fantastic new gadget that means you don't even have to carry anything around! Just swipe your wrist and pay! Well I think technology is only a way our disconectedness can manifest. I have a few friends.. none of them have smart-phones, I am the only one of them that created a Fb. profile less than a year ago, none of us watches TV (some of them do occasionally, but not as a habbit). Almost every one of us is lean and healthy, most of us have at least one animal companion at home and most of us are regularly doing some form of exercise. We all use our phones 95% just for their functional value. All these traits are completely opposite of what is portrayed in this video and yet we are still mainly disconnected and we rarely find some meaningful common ground. Therefore I have to conclude that sadly, technology is just a "blame-horse" for our inability to be profoundly connected and to live in the moment, because the reason we are seems to be hidden even deeply. And so we take solace in the thought that it's the technology that divided us, but in truth there is something (missing?) in our very core that is not enabling most of us to stay meaningfully connected or live in the present.

And people are more than happy to do that, as it is a privilege now, because it's still rare. By the time it will be common, people will be doing it/having it, because the majority does it/has it also. Catch 22, solutions generated before problems to generate problems for what the soutions don't really work. What a waste of time and energy this new-world order is.

I tried to tell a doctor once that my kid was addicted to his cell phone .. he had violent reactions if it was taken away or wouldn't work .. I was told that there is no such thing as cell addiction .. I CALL BULL SHIT .. ITS HAPPENING EVERYWHERE ..

Christine Sutton-Linklater , My teen nearly had a nervous breakdown when I told her she would be without her phone for a max of 1 hour so i could take it to the Apple store to have it fixed. In the end she chose not to have it fixed so she would not have to go without "connection". People can get addicted to hand-washing. Why not cell phone use?

Why feel embarrassed on the behalf of others, be you're self, be good to others that's what you can do for the human race.

I have been a technical nerd long before it was a popular thing to be, it was actually the opposite.

But there is some thing I never do, it is to ignore the one that is right beside me, nor do I use my smart-phone or other stuff when I'm in a restaurant or in places where it unnecessarily can disturb others.

I was just talking to my cousin the other day about what we did before everyone had cell phones. We had to play hide n seek, kick the can, ride out bicycles to the pool and swim all day and ride them back. The only people who had cell phones we’re Corporations who had Motorola Satellite phones which cost around $4,000 dollars. It’s sad to say that almost everyone has cell phones, and besides that young people would rather “Text” their friends instead of calling them. It’s a shame, period.........

People used to oppose highway development, because they thought only rich people have cars. How about before refrigeration? before invention of cars? before men discover fire? We're just evolving as a society, nothing wrong with that. What's wrong with texting? Maybe I don't want to be bothered by a phone call, you send me a text, I read it when I get a chance. His point IS valid, the point being before we were "connected 24-7" via our devices we were connected on a more personal level. People weren't so selfish and cavalier with their relationships " I'll read their message when I get a chance" People were far more considerate of other's time and interacted with that premise, realizing that the world isn't centered around them self. You actually had to look into their eyes, interact, be entertaining and display some social skills. When I see people staring into their phones when they're in an elevator because the idea of looking into a strangers' face is more than they could possibly stomach, it's pathetic. Ditto for a circle of people staring into their phones because the company of their friends is not entertaining enough. People are getting slower, fatter, lazier, worse at communicating, and they all seem to have this weird form of ADD. Doesn't sound that all that sexy to me.

@William In the 80s-90s we stayed inside every summer and watched TV. This was before cell phones. So the theory that "before cell phones" everyone spent hours of their free time looking longingly into peoples' eyes is false. There is always going to be some technology to impede human interaction.

I don't own a cell phone either... It's so hard not to own one... You feel left out. But, then I remember why I don't own one... Like in the video, I look at people and they look like zombies staring at this tiny screen. It's almost laughable sometimes. Oh, and that time I work for the collection agency for a big cell phone company... And knowing the company I worked for were brainwashing people into getting phones they didn't need... And, then, trying to collect the tons of money the stupid people would rack up in fees because they didn't read the fine print.

My husband is always using his cell phone when we're doing things. It is most annoying when we are out to dinner with friends. How can someone be so disengaged? I don't even have a smart phone. My cell phone makes and receives calls only and if I am unlucky someone might text me - which costs me because I don't have unlimited texting. Wish people would try to engage just a little more.

We have a large family with lots of nieces/nephews in the 20-something age group... we began a family rule about 3yrs ago.... check your phones at the door with family get-togethers.. no texting/posting FBing allowed. There was quite a stink the first few times.... after that no one even missed not being 'plugged in' for the duration of the get-together..

I need my phone for my business but when I'm on holiday the phone stays switched off and the Laptop stays home. I was in Miami last year and every night I went to a restaurant they were people sitting around a table not speaking with each other but texting to others on their phone (maybe to each other by phone lol) it seems more of an epidemic in the USA than Europe.

Well it's sad, yes. But if you discipline yourself it can work well. I think that the last couple of years of online life are not enough to totally destroy social human behaviour. It will take us some time but we will learn to cope with it. We will get bored, it will be normal again.

The faster we learn to adapt smarthpones into healthy social lifes the better. Going back is illusive.

Christiane Tänzer I think it's just a hype. I can see this with my wife, she hated me for my addictive iPhone behaviour, now I'm bored of constantly staring onto the screen and she does. But it's getting better and when were out together it's absolutely no question of looking each other in the eye than on our cold blue screen.

Agreed. I often have moments at a table of friends like the one in the video, but then eventually figure, hey why don't I check my phone while they check theirs? Which is why I think it's better to say something obvious like "phone break!" so at least everyone is on the same page, and you don't just have some people drifitng off while checking their phone during someone's story or whatnot. I believe it is more respectful.

The one that really gets me though is the Birthday Scene. People get caught up recording special moments, but the person whose moment it is (ie birthday boy/girl) doesn't have those smiling faces looking excitedly at them, doesn't have those people really engaging them in that moment... It makes you think of what it is teaching kids to do- avoid eye contact and only appreciate special moments through electronic devices? Which is why I feel that all smart phones standard with a versatile tripod. Or possibly even a head band attachment :D

No, seriously. The people on their phones are trading off: a weaker connection to their local environment, for a stronger connection to the contemporary digital global conversation. It's the information age. It's not just that the global conversation is more important today. The point is, cheap, mobile broadband devices have at long last actually allowed that truly contemporary conversation to EXIST. To exclude yourself from it is at best willfully ignorant and at worst irresponsible.

Interesting how divided people are on this issue. I understand both sides. Yes, it is amazing how easy it is nowadays, to exchange information, values, experience and opinions with so many people on this planet. It actually *looks like* we're inching towards a state of existence that has collectivist, interconnected traits. At least when it comes to potential information exchange.

A lot of folks don't want that or don't see the advantage. They'd rather live a life of direct perception, of individual experience, and local exchange. We could say that there are local-minded and global-minded people.

An interesting point is how local-minded people (and this is completely neutral, not derogatory) sometimes still get very 'involved' with remote places, despite this purely local concern: There are wars in which naive soldiers (by naive I mean that they, individually, don't have much business with other countries) are sent abroad to bomb places and kill people for an asserted 'national interest' (local).

I think it's a matter of how to use the medium internet. It's amazing how we all here exchange opinions. And I'm sure everyone takes away a little bit of each other. Maybe most are using desktop PCs, and then it's really just a question of mobile / immobile (ubiquitous). Maybe that's what the discussion is all about. Cell / smart phones? That has nothing to do with local / global, any more then, but with the immediacy of experience vs experience through interfaces. In that sense, smart phone users are the social drones of each other, feeding experience back into the main stream (pun intended).

It's a different state of existence. I wouldn't judge it as crap. Not everyone who looks like a zombie (what is a zombie? don't you guys watch too many movies, instead of real experience? Funnily, in movies, 'zombies' are the metaphor for poor people) is a zombie. Some could say smart phones empower introverts who are anxious in other people's close proximity. Are we taking this empowerment away from them? Being 'present' doesn't necessarily have to be good, always. Is there maybe another concept of time and space? At the same time we shouldn't force people who are anxious about being connected virtually, to participate in this global stream of shared experience.

Everyone has the choice, and I think it's not even the end of the story. In one generation, the smart phone 'zombies' will complain about their children who are brain-connected with the stream, 24/7. Or who will make the jump and jettison their biological bodies for virtual life. It's conceivable. At this point, the human eye is relatively better than a camera (to give a visual example for all these visual people), but who knows, it's possible that there will come a time when brain-connected folks have better vision than 'real' people. By that I mean wider angles, switchable cameras, more zoom and higher resolution. That will be hard to take away for some, then. And it's an analog to what happens today with all this 'enhanced interactivity'.

Helen, the sad face has to do with the fact that people are more isolated and adsorbed in their cell/smart phones. I think it is out of hand and contributes to a breakdown of community spirit. Just my lil ole opinion! ;)

This is sooooo telling of our culture. We have a generation who cannot function without an electronic device in their hands. People no longer write letters or send postcards. Instead, they text, tweet, post, IM, or email. People sit in groups and don't talk to one another. We've become detatched in the name of staying 'in touch'. It's a lie...........

this is why I am afraid to enter the "smart phone" world. it's addicting! I sit at a pub w/my friends and/or family and and there's ALWAYS a point in which I look up and see everyone but me is staring at their phones, texting, facebooking, what have you. It's not only insulting, it's sad. the message these folks are sending is: "my phone is more important than the company of my friends or family". rude.

yeah...

it's weird. my "smart" phone has broken internet app and no games...so I can bring it wherever and never get distracted. unless i'm staring at pics of my adorable family.

then I get to annoy the shit out of everyone at the bar, when I get a night out on the town with the boys.

"see, ain't my daughter cute", I say to the dozen friends around me, none of whom have kids.

it's a form of cockblocking. because the ladies bring up the subject of kids with their men. and that pretty much ends all romantic dealings for the evening.

My pet peeve is when people talk phone calls which are usually just social when we are out together. When people take the time to visit or go to dinner with you, they deserve some respect. We were at my sons house yesterday. He went to put the baby to sleep and my daughter-in-law spent the 1/2 hour texting, not talking to us at all. I was highly pissed.

REALLY, REALLY SAD! We seem really good at developing and perfecting new and better ways of avoiding each other. I used to wonder what the big deal was when all my neighbors in Brooklyn would sit out on their "stoops" and talk all night long. Wow, Face to face relationships what a novel idea. I know you can never go back. But our lack of real human contact is hurting us all real bad, and is really painful to watch.

This is sweet and accurate on many levels but... On the same note the phone is not the culprit, its how we use it, and everyone's need to keep an online presence and not be present in the real world keeps us from using technology properly, as the advantages are there. Having a map you can look at with different scales and different types, being able to look up a question or fact within a moment, to be able to access the net and find the lowest competing prices or find a manual to operate and use almost anything, and the apparent ability to contact and be contacted by friends and family almost anywhere you are... There are so many more advantages than disadvantages, its just how you use it and chances are there are more things wrong with your psyche than this, if it is a problem for you.

The advent of touch phones, android based, which connects us to the internet and outside world is making us forget to live our inside world. And this is happening across countries. I force myself to shut down my mobile off for at least 4 hours after office hours. Let the sky fall down, but I need my space even from my own mobile. Practice this and one will find more peace.
