They are all beautiful!
2013/09/22 at 04:39
Definitely beautiful women.
2013/09/22 at 21:35
2013/09/22 at 22:14
Too beautiful, if you ask me! That's what leads me to believe this is utterly fake. The faces have obviously been beautified. Either that or they only used beautiful models from each country... Which still leaves me thinking this is all crap. Neat idea, though!
2013/09/23 at 00:27
I suspect what they did was take one persons face, and adjust the features based on physical markers for each racial group. I don't think any of these are an actual person, rather one persns face has been altered to show what she would look like as a member of each cultural group.
2013/09/23 at 00:31
Erin Nickerson A blend of many faces tends to look very beautiful. The human idea of beautiful is an idealized average. Oddities and non symmetrical shapes are unattractive. I have to say this with a fair amount of chagrin, since my own face is not very symmetrical, average, or beautiful.
2013/09/23 at 01:11
Gra Gor all of them im agree!
2013/09/23 at 02:15
Erin Nickerson It is not like that. They used all women, just that the averages blur the lines and thus imperfections or rare facial features. In fact a study showed "average" faces in tests consistently scored more attractive than particular faces: this is not manipulated, just the natural outcome.
2013/09/23 at 02:16
Erin Nickerson The faces have obviously been beautified (c)??? Everywhere, but not in Russia! :)
2013/09/23 at 03:45
Erin Nickerson Nah. They haven't been beautified. It just happens that when you average faces the composites end up being more attractive than the particular faces that go into the composite. Presumably this is because features that are found unattractive for one reason or another are weeded out by the averaging process. Say, for example, someone with an unusually large nose being averaged with someone with an unusually small nose, resulting in a nose that is neither too large or too small, and so on like that.
2013/09/23 at 05:44
It's funny -- they all appear very attractive, which leads one to think they are in fact NOT average -- but I read a study done recently that showed that the people who are considered attractive by others generally actually have AVERAGE facial structures and colouration. These people, whose features fit into the common average, are the attractive ones. Hence, this could very well be an average :)
2013/09/23 at 11:42
Erin Nickerson I agree with you.
2013/09/23 at 17:35
Erin Nickerson Yep. Similar ages, modelesque. It would hard (but not impossible) to wrangle every age, every demographic. So agree - crap, but neat idear.
2013/09/23 at 17:58
Erin Nickerson Actually not beautified -- plenty of research has shown that "average" faces, i.e. those that have been fused together with hundreds of photographs, are actually more symmetrical and literally fit the beauty "ideal."
2013/09/23 at 20:23
Average faces are alway's gonna be beautifull cause average is what we look for, it is the exeptional that we don't like. A nose that is too big, too small eyes,... An average face will never have that and it will be almost perfectly semetrical.
2013/09/23 at 21:01
Erin Nickerson i think but im not sure that its based of a census of photographs which are then ran through a facial recognizing program which takes all the repeated features and imposes them onto one face.
Lishui K Springford:
2013/09/23 at 21:57
Erin Nickerson when faces are averaged together, they become more symmetrical and "perfect" and so averages are always more "beautiful"
Marteen De Santiago:
2013/09/23 at 22:26
Erin Nickerson http://faceresearch.org/students/averageness it's called The ‘Averageness Hypothesis’ of attractiveness
2013/09/24 at 03:00
Erin Nickerson Maybe ugly women are not photographed as much and did not send in their pics?
2013/09/24 at 03:14
Actually, it's in our nature to find symmetry appealing. Studies have shown that an average of as few as 6 faces is considered beautiful, often more so than any individual face. So it makes total sense that a composite of many women would look like one beautiful woman, regardless of the attractiveness of the individuals.
2013/09/24 at 04:48
Erin Nickerson No - it's a software algorithm that averages a large set of photos. They've known for a long time that the larger the photo set that produces the average, the more likely that people were perceive the result as "attractive." There was a whole issue of Time Magazine dedicated to this about 15 years ago.
2013/09/24 at 05:14
Erin Nickerson I think one thing they all have in common is that they are young. If you look at young women in the street, the vast majority are attractive.
2013/09/24 at 09:49
Erin Nickerson these are averaged faces, morfed from many (typical) faces put together. Averaged faces tend to be beautiful
2013/09/24 at 11:13
Erin Nickerson That's what i thought
2013/09/24 at 12:35
Erin Nickerson you are just mad because you look like a pale big bird with a Ronald McDonald wig on. Did you seriously look at all the girls? you apparently need to go ahead and hang it up with miss she Samoa. Because while she is serving me caveman realness, You are serving me confused bottle of ketchup, with a side off Squidward Tentacles nose. Thank you and have a nice day. AHEM!
2013/09/24 at 12:50
Erin Nickerson I think it's actually the point to show us that with many different facial features, you get an average of beautiful in every country.
2013/09/22 at 02:00
These are not average women
2013/09/22 at 02:05
It's their faces amalgamated, so, yes, they are average faces.
2013/09/22 at 02:38
Yeah, I'm noticing the African women are all remarkably mocha skinned as opposed to dark skinned. I'd be guessing that is not average.
2013/09/22 at 02:40
Cari Milton I would agree.
2013/09/22 at 02:41
Cari Milton actually Africa should have have maybe 50 more phenotypes and 50 more shade
2013/09/22 at 02:53
Cari Milton It is politically correct to say dark skinned.
2013/09/22 at 03:00
African women have a very wide variety of skin shades and tones depending on where on the very large continent they're located.
2013/09/22 at 03:13
Cari Milton I believe, the keyword you're missing is AVERAGE.
Check the spread of the population and the percentage of what you believe is the "dark" skin Africans. The majority of the population in Africa are not the "black dudes" of the movies. These guys live in the States now... you know how they ended up there.
Exaggerating... ain't I? ...or not
2013/09/22 at 03:19
Greg Krezos let me add also that 99% of African american have at least 39% european dna SO they and me of the west indies are truly mutts i ounce called an african black and he looked at me and told me he is not and that term was only associated with slaves and he did not have any enslaved ancestors and that he had a tribal name older than america it self So
I think each one is a beauty!
2013/09/22 at 06:04
Cari Milton You are right as well as cute :D
2013/09/22 at 06:36
Cari Milton I would say that would be due to the layering effect, each image would be need to be made transparent before amalgamating the images, which would result in the colours being lighter and less vibrant.
2013/09/22 at 06:48
Carrie Hodlik how you know they're amalgamated?
2013/09/22 at 07:22
Cari Milton ... first off mocha skinned being dark skinned notwithstanding, your guess would be wrong... generally the further away from the equator one gets, the fairer the complexion gets... we are called women of color for a reason... we're not all burnt ebony... we naturally range in complexion and the average is a velvet chocolate (Mocha)... either way our complexion is delicious... not a death-warmed-up complexion whatsoever... now you know
2013/09/22 at 08:26
Cari Milton , what colour are the Xosa? the San? Ndbele? Bendalites? Somalians? there are many shades in Africa. Why you expect them to be dark skinned is beyond reason. If you know 1. anything about Africa 2.anything about the origins of mankind, you would understand that if you take the average of the dark and the light ethnics you get what is represented above.
In Nigeria there are 200 tribes some are lighter skinned than others are you telling me that if you averaged the people in the link below they would be dark skinned? think about where YOU get your ideas and representations.
Just so you know, the original human beings were as you describe 'mocha' in colour, so when you think on the origins of mankind coming out of Africa do not think "Eve" was dark skinned she was light skinned...
2013/09/22 at 09:05
Carrie Hodlik no, it's an average of the above average
Eric A. Smith:
2013/09/22 at 09:25
Cari Milton : lighting.
2013/09/22 at 09:47
Cari Milton Erm what about the French woman being paler than the English woman?
2013/09/22 at 10:12
Cari Milton it, depends on on the African country. They just picked countries where the skin is not a dark. But across all of the countries there is a spectrum of hues relative to skin color.
2013/09/22 at 11:00
You and others are not taking into account the white women or other minority races in those countries. These are average faces. The world is mixing, homogenizing is the point one can draw.
2013/09/22 at 13:02
no, these must not be "average" women, they only used aesthetically pleasing, symmetrical, nicely groomed, clear skinned, tweezed-eyebrow faces. everyone can't be beautiful, i think they conveniently left out less-than attractive faces when they did this.
2013/09/22 at 13:16
Cari Milton right, and Africa is the largest continent with the largest diversity in the world. yet all 4 women are close to the same shade in skin color. and yes it looks like they emitted the chocolate skinned women from this survey.
2013/09/22 at 13:35
In response to Cari Milton, way up at the top, don't Africans also tend to be racist against the darker skinned? The African woman is probably lighter then expected since so much of the really dark skin had been killed off. It seems all races tend to prefer lighter skin.
2013/09/22 at 13:36
Carrie Hodlik , they are averaged, not average. I think most 'average' women feel they fall short of this standard. Or at least, I feel that they do.
2013/09/22 at 13:38
Cari Milton Actually that is average for the African regions they identified. I am from Nigeria.
2013/09/22 at 13:47
Karen Marbury No they are not "racist to the darker skins" in Africa, that is a ridiculous statement.
What the hell are you talking about the darker skinned being killed off, the only thing that is going on in Africa is skin bleaching that is in the minority that is due to the colonial history in Africa and Europeans favoured the African's who were lighter in complexion, no one is being killed off. African's have always been of varying complexions as well as hair textures. Your statement is highly offensive.
2013/09/22 at 02:14
those are the faces that make up the average American woman where do you think Americans came from
2013/09/22 at 03:58
then the same would be for the other countries, you think theyre all 100% their nationalities? i think not
2013/09/22 at 04:58
Yet again the main origin of "america", this land, is indian.(As far as i know) Sooooo yea.
2013/09/22 at 06:02
Tito Alberto exactly and where are the indigenous women in this?? also australian aboriginal, canadian etc etc..
2013/09/22 at 06:14
Tito Alberto No, Indians are in INDA, it's Native Americans.
2013/09/22 at 06:19
They tried to put an american on there, but they couldn't get it to fit.

2013/09/22 at 11:06
Do you people even know what AVERAGE means? ffs
2013/09/22 at 12:30
All people living on this planet today can be traced back to "mitochondrial eve" who lived about 150,000 years ago in Africa. We are all came from Africa. http://ngm.nationalgeographic.com/2006/03/human-journey/shreeve-text/2
2013/09/22 at 12:33
Tito Alberto you mean native american, not indian as in from india.
2013/09/22 at 12:35
Caroline Cordier American Indian
2013/09/22 at 13:01
Adam and Eve.
2013/09/22 at 15:04
Caroline Cordier I kept thinking the same thing. this is very euro-centric
2013/09/22 at 15:59
Randi Large North korea is!
2013/09/22 at 19:11
Tito Alberto unfortunately so many Native Americans got killed or died of "imported" diseases that the main origin of today's US Americans is largely European with some African American and Asian "thrown " into the mix...
Gail Chicky Gallagher:
2013/09/22 at 20:59
Caroline Cordier agree! abit of a colonialist view, the Aborginal women in Canada, are invisible again!
2013/09/22 at 23:25
Tito Alberto-- They only called the Native Americans Indians because they thought they came to India and found out they were wrong... Their called Americans for it is North AMERICA........... So that means Canandians, Mexicans, and people down in south America are all Americans.
Amanda Anne Connell:
2013/09/22 at 23:48
Caroline Cordier Canadian = all of the above... :P
2013/09/22 at 23:56
Tito Alberto They are called Native Americans, Indians live in India. FYI
2013/09/23 at 01:07
Caroline Cordier for what a teacher tell me the indigenous come from asia! thats for why the eyes like ... and this is the firsth americans imigrants the ones more all all from america in the mayas even before jesus they was living in the mexicann aerea and guatemala..etc.
2013/09/23 at 01:09
we'r not really from indians cause we'r red blood they are green one ! imean like blue blood rigth??
2013/09/23 at 02:05
Tito Alberto Wanna know why everyone calls native americans Indians? Because when the europeans came to north america they were originally going to India and thought the people they saw were indians and they never bothered to stop calling them indians
2013/09/23 at 02:13
Aaron Balagtas and black people are haters?
Lars Chiron Bohr:
2013/09/22 at 03:15
What a crock of bull! None of those women are "typical" of their culture/region. They post a bunch of idealized women that are far better looking than average with the perfect symmetrical features prized by model agencies as if this is the norm and now women the world over have to try to live up to this ridiculous unreal standard or end up feeling they don't measure up.
2013/09/22 at 09:23
Alright fella chill...
2013/09/22 at 17:53
Lars has a strong point!
2013/09/22 at 18:45
No, we do this in my school's psychology department. The more faces you average together, the more beautiful they appear because each tiny imperfection gets washed out.
2013/09/22 at 18:48
plus I dont think they have taken the 'average' age of woman in each country into account, would have thought the 'average ' woman in a lot of the countries would be older than these
2013/09/22 at 19:18
Lars - I think you have misunderstood. There's a clue in the title - these are a"average faces"; composite pictures made of a great many individuals. However.. I would like to know what the selection criteria were. For example did they just take a random sample from an existing database (eg of passport photos). there could be a statistical bias if they got that wrong. And there certainly would if the candidates self-selected by sending in their pictures
2013/09/22 at 19:26
Craig Leman ...hear hear...although it seems Sophia Hines has an interesting point...
2013/09/22 at 20:35
they took samples of all the women in the these countries and merged them together and this is what the computer came up. they are not trying to redefine beauty or create an unrealistic standard of beauty. I think all the women are beautiful. they are all very average and not one is cover-girl or America's next top model beautiful. this is what the melting pot looks like.
Adam J. Qüæck:
2013/09/22 at 21:37
Bear Morgan Lars is slightly missing the point.
Christina Helena Saavedra:
2013/09/22 at 21:44
Sophia Hines in that case, maybe imperfections = diversity?
2013/09/22 at 22:21
Sophia Hines might be a good argument as to why people should mate interracially more often.
2013/09/22 at 23:19
Sophia Hines That's why evolution is considered to be fairly "smart"
2013/09/22 at 23:45
Ummmm those are definitely average women. Idealized my ass. Where are you from? Wisconsin??
2013/09/23 at 00:36
A blend of faces is beautiful. The ideal of beautiful is symmetrical, average. Those who are non symmetrical, odd, misshapen, not average, are considered unattractive. All together, layered together, the odd pieces are canceled out, leaving only the similarities, which rather do look like the women from modeling agencies. Modeling agencies hire people who are the perfect idealized 'average'. Which seems odd, really.....
2013/09/23 at 08:03
Wow Lars, take a break and chill out! You apparently missed the memo that it was an average OF faces, not THE average.
2013/09/23 at 10:06
i been to may of these countries - it's pretty accurate!....on average!. they nailed it !!!
François Josué Dionne:
2013/09/23 at 15:01
Sophia Hines So there is enought women to cancel imperfection, but not enought to cancel the hair? or the smile?(as in india, wich is more smily then other country...). they probably didn't take a lot of picture for each place...
2013/09/23 at 16:34
The symmetry is a result of the averaging process. Assuming random distribution of asymmetrical features, when you average them out, all of the aberrations go away.
2013/09/23 at 19:02
Wrong: average=beauty. It's the Goldilocks effect: not TOO much of this, not TOO much of that. Sorry Lars, sucks to be you.
2013/09/24 at 09:52
yes, Sophia is right, and they become symmetrical because of morfing, too. If they were pure nationalities it is hard to say, but the fact that they are all beautiful is believable, that is what happens when you average many faces together
2013/09/25 at 00:42
So? Get over your beauty bigotry. Seeing an optimized face, not matter which country, helps ... it doesn't hurt. You need to vomit the feminist poison pill you swallowed and realize beauty DOES exist and it is a wonderful thing.
2013/09/25 at 00:51
Please research koinophilia. Francis Galton, a half cousin of Charles Darwin, created composite portraits of a number of convicted criminals, hoping to generate a prototypical criminal face. Surprisingly, the composite portrait became more and more attractive with the addition of each new face. Galton published this rather inexplicable finding in 1878, concluding that average features combine to create good-looking faces. (from Wikipedia)
2013/09/25 at 04:54
Bah every one has this potential. Life beats us down.
Antonio Fernández Pedauyé:
2013/10/07 at 07:45
Sophia Hines Bullcrap, they are all idealized. All of them inside what we would call "standard beauty" (except the samoan XD).
2013/10/07 at 08:53
Paul Coyne A British Victorian social scientist discovered this "average=handsome" effect when he morphed together the mugshots of 100 criminals. He was trying to identify "the look of criminality". Victorian criminals typically looked rough! But when morphed together, the resultant photo was an extremely handsome man. There was an exhibition at the London Science Museum a few years ago, devoted to faces that showed the photos:q00 individuals and the final morphed. So even if the participants did self select, the end result would still be a very attractive average.
Andel Van der Westhuizen:
2013/10/07 at 13:27
well perefcly symetrical faces are not preferred by the populous..studies show that people like asynetrical a bit more as symetrical seems to look awkward..
James Winfrey III:
2013/09/22 at 02:21
Western hemisphere (Canada, North and South America) likely aren't represented because most of the inhabitants in these areas aren't recently indigenous enough - that is to say, comparatively speaking, most of the people currently living in the west are descendants of those who just arrived in the past 400 or so years-not enough time to see a new "average" woman.
2013/09/22 at 02:33
I think that is why it would be so cool to see. In rebuttal though they do have Argentina up there. I am sure to shit there were no European people there more than a few hundred years ago and she looks to have a definitely European influence. As well as the Peruvian, Mexican, and Brazilian ladies. In fact the Brazilian lady looks like a mix of all kinds of types. A Canadian Lady would be the best looking!!! ;)
2013/09/22 at 02:37
Well, they did Argentina and Brazil, countries full of European- and African-originating people. So it's reasonable to wonder why no America/Canada/Australia
2013/09/22 at 02:48
Mike Waller true!
Brandon McGinnity true!
2013/09/22 at 03:20
Brandon McGinnity Plus everyone in America is Mixed so it's kind of hard to determine an average American face.
2013/09/22 at 03:35
I have to say that both you and the study didn't really acknowledge the Native American or to be more specific the Amerindian peoples of the Americas. Those countries like Mexico, Peru, El Salvador, Guatemala, etc. Those demographics are not largely European or African heritage but rather towards Amerindian people. Even in Brazil there is a sizable mestizo population. Mestizo people make up 60% of the Mexican population with 30% being of pure Indigenous heritage. This number is similar throughout Latin America. Those countries that are the exception would be the Caribbean nations and places like Argentina and Costa Rica. So to me this chart is incomplete without the inclusion of Amerindian descendants.
2013/09/22 at 03:39
Over 800 million people in the Americas. Of those there are many more people of Indigenous heritage than we acknowledge. There are hundreds of millions of people whose roots are Pre-Columbian.
Marco Aurélio Hoegen Martins:

Mike Waller The brazilian girl is wrong. I'm brazilian and i'm whiter than Norway. Brazil is white white white white white white white white white white white white white white white white white white white white white
Just kidding, but i must disagree with you, Argentina did not have much african originating people. And the part of Brazil i live in did not too. I'm white myself.
2013/09/22 at 04:04
what about the native American Indian??
Cynthia A. Weber:
2013/09/22 at 04:46
What about the American Indian?
Why weren't they represented? Because we killed most of them?
2013/09/22 at 06:05
Brandon McGinnity completely agree Brandon, bit of a let down not to see any Australian, American or Canadian indigenous women up there
2013/09/22 at 13:05
Mike Waller, Best looking according to whom ? Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
2013/09/22 at 14:57
They did some of Mexico and some of South America — Peru, Argentina, and Brazil.
2013/09/22 at 15:01
I see is that diversity is present, but really this women don't look all that different; If you go back far enough, the women would all begin to look alike, that is after all of the asymmetrical deviations are removed, as this project has done.
2013/09/22 at 15:58
Well...America is known for being a "melting pot" of different cultures due to so many different people migrating here. We are so diverse, the "average" face would just look odd, as we are all so different.
2013/09/22 at 18:47
US population is 63% white, 13% black,16% Hispanic, 5% Asian and 3% native and Islander. If we let the computer scan the photos of the entire 151 Million US citizen women, the result will show an average face that might not please everybody because it will not correctly represent anyone's local perception of what an American woman looks like. So, for the sake of not causing an uproar, they have left it alone. The South American countries have a far different demographics and they are more relaxed about diversities.
2013/09/22 at 21:34
Mike Waller The indiginous population of Argentina was totally wiped out by the Spanish.
2013/09/22 at 22:43
Brandon McGinnity To do an Australian example, they could just mix all of the others together. we are such a multicultural nation that it would be pretty hard to find an Aussie mean...
2013/09/22 at 23:32
So many of us here in Canada and the US are a mix of races and nationalities, anyway. I did see Peru, Brazil, and Argentina listed for South America. But all of those young "average" women as so very pretty! And aren't we ALL beautiful in some way or other? I still think Whoopi Goldberg is beautiful. :-)
2013/09/23 at 00:26
Mike Waller the brasilian average like this.. half afro, big nose... pretty eyes. and a little belly. exactely like it

Mike Waller your canadian women could be french, english or other, I think the local canadians are inuit? am I correct?
Also the New Zealand Maori, fijian, or other pacific islands nations are not here, fijian, togan, niuean and samoan look completly different, also Aboringines and Papuans are left out, both are very dark skinned but also very western in features apart from nose.
there is no AVERAGE, we are all human, we all bleed, we all love and die...
if you human, your average/
2013/09/23 at 12:59
Mike Waller I'm argentinian, and I can tell you that until the late 1800s there was about 1million people in this ocuntry and once the immigration from europe started the population doubled... So yeah... there is european influence

When did West Africa become a country? The last time I checked, it was comprised of 15+ distinct countries.
2013/09/22 at 19:15
When did England become a country? It's just a region of the UK
2013/09/22 at 20:29
England has always been a country and is ruled by common law and its people. The United Kingdom is a corporate legal fiction and is ruled by Admiralty law and the freemasons.

Yes, West Africa is a geographically and ethnically diverse region. With a relatively homogenous (genetically speaking) population. Culturally, there is incredible variation. But if you tell me that you can tell a Sierra Leonean from a Senegalese woman based solely on her facial features, I'll tell you you're full of it. Besides, I don't know what you're complaining about, the West African woman's face is quite beautiful. As is the Ethiopian (which would be roughly similar to a Somali face, as well)

Paul, of course England is a country. I am English and last I knew Great Britain/British Isles was made of 3 countries, England, Wales and Scotland with the addition of Northern Ireland. If you are a British citizen, pull out your British passport and look and read it. Paul, your country of birth is Scotland and your nationality is British. Thought you might like to know that. Like it or not. The face representing England, to me, does not represent the typical English person. My Grandmother would have been a great symbol. I am English, with white, black and East Indian blood. Mum English and dad Guyanese, once known as British Guyana. Ignorant people will say to me, you don't look English. What a STUPID statement.
2013/10/06 at 22:48
Paul Coyne England is a region? Where are you and the people who liked your comment getting that from? That is totally ignorant.
2013/10/10 at 06:56
Jessica Elizabeth Kelly and every one else; Paul Coyne is quite correct at this moment in time. England is a part of the UK, we don't have English passports, nor do the English have a seat in the UN, England doesn't have its own army nor foreign policy. It is no more of a country legally than Catalonia or the Basque Country. Under New Labour, England was run and ruled entirely by Scots.
2013/10/31 at 03:11
maybe the free masons years ago but have you seen some of them today? more bog shop builders that belonged in the buffalos than freemasons, were all dooooomed

2013/09/22 at 04:50
Nick Weslowski What kind of women are you around? Because you look fairly young and I would think women your age would not be fat.I can't understand fat in youth.
Whether he meant it as a rude joke or not, Nick Weslowski's comment is at least partially true. The US has, by a significant margin, the highest rate of obesity in the world. The same, then, could be said of the average American Man.

Nope, Mexico is now the fattest country, think.
NO KIDDING NICK. AND GETTING FATTER, WHAT SUCK IS THE FATTER AMERICA GETS THE MORE IT IS BEING ACCEPTED. IT IS GETTING SO DISGUSTING.
2013/09/22 at 20:42
The English settled in America soo....
2013/09/22 at 21:29
that would be the average of all of the above... or if they can find enough native americans, but i geuss that is pretty hard these days...
2013/09/23 at 00:23
Why does the US females "HAVE" to be included? It is a very big world and it should have to always be about us.

2013/09/23 at 15:48
Nick Weslowski....I'd say the same thing about the average American man.
2013/09/23 at 23:13
Nick Weslowski lol... bad... but I guess they are missing a lot faces on that chart..

No Native American either. Or Native Canadians. No Iceland or Greenland that I remember. Seems like Africa is not accurate, most mocca not not black skinned. What about other "tribes" like Papua, New Guinea. What about Hawaii? But still it is interesting. I would like to see a combination of all of the above.
2013/09/22 at 04:52
Douglas Christie I would love to see them expand on this... to more . And even do one on men.

Douglas Christie Finding a pure native hawaiian is rare, most are part chinese and/or some kind of white. Most people living in hawaii today are predominantly asian a half (hapa in hawaiian) mix like myself (I'm one quarter Japanese, one quarter chinese and white mostly welch and scots irish). My grandmother actually looked like the han chinese and mongolian woman combined.

Robert J Scott:
2013/09/22 at 13:54
English, Scottish and Welsh what about them?
2013/09/22 at 15:29
Douglas Christie I'm assuming that all the faces were lightened up somewhat because of all the picture layering they had to do. Tht's the only thing I can think of
2013/09/22 at 20:41
the white africans would actually lightened the "average complexion" they took a bunch of pictures of the people in the various locations (and back grounds) and a computer averaged the physical features, skin colors and hair textures. so it's about right. if you have 5 dark skinned Africans and mix them with 1 white African, that white African would lighten the gene pool.
2013/09/22 at 21:47
Douglas Christie Mexico would be the closest to the Native American category I think you're referring to; technically, I am "Native American", but from the "wrong" side of the border - the border wasn't there for the first 50,000 years of people migrating around the North American continent. In that sense, native Mexicans (or Mesoamericans) are indigenous and are technically Native American - there's just no official recognition, north or south of the US/Mexico border...
2013/09/23 at 10:08
Douglas Christie boo boo..cry cry...lol..that's already a huge fort, to compute the averages of all these people... can't do it all.. the might rich and strong swiss are missing too... no americans lol...(look like swedish anyways)... anyways, they'll do more i'm sure.
2013/09/23 at 10:14
Douglas Christie boo boo..cry cry...lol..j/K...that's already a huge effort, to compute the averages of all these people... can't do it all.. even the mighty rich swiss are missing, ,,,and ...surprise .. no americans lol...(look like swedish anyways)... they'll do more i'm sure if this takes off.
2013/09/23 at 15:43
who cares? Except for the Irish; because all the others are basically English average.
2013/09/25 at 05:54
Do they still exist: native Americans ?
2013/10/07 at 09:04
Douglas Christie So you think the average African people are slightly lighter colour than you expect? two possibilities:
A) The experimenters are wrong.
B) Your expectations are wrong.
Which is most likely? I guess as a you are a photographer, you could justifiably claim to have more experience than most, at seeing people's skin. But have you got enough experience of photographing black Africans to contradict this experiment. If so, publish your counter photographic evidence and we'll peer review it. Until then, I'll be going with option B. And I am happy to be surprised at learning something new i.e. that the average African face (albeit from a limited number of African countries) is lighter than I first thought, rather then being conceited enough as to think that someone's experiment is wrong, because it doesn't make me prejudices.

why is west africa summarized as one country? and chad and cameroon have totally different appearances and are in completely different hemispheres of africa =/ why is almost the whole of europe depicted and only "4 regions" in africa??
2013/09/25 at 13:53
Lots of comments that this must be fake because they're all "beautiful."
I read a study years ago that, in fact, what we consider beautiful can accurately described as fairly "average." This was years ago (before internet), but the study concluded that what most people refer to or designate as traditionally "beautiful" is characterized by not having too many unique, or out-of-the-ordinary features or strange ratios/proportions. In other words, kind of average. As these images are "averages" created by layering imagery -- diminishing distinction and emphasizing commonality -- it makes sense to me that they would all look "beautiful" - as unique and out-of-the-ordinary features and proportions would be diminished by this technique.
maybe for some countries its hard to have a "general" look because it's extremely multi-racial... like let's say Malaysia... there's Malay, Indian, Chinese and Thais and they dont really always mix... so they have maintained their general looks to their own race in one country. Kinda like USA... it's very diverse... there is no general look... it's just a beautiful mix.
2013/09/22 at 04:05
in Malaysia... you can probably categorize the women by the intensity of their body odor... :D just sayin'...

2013/09/25 at 00:50
Appreciate the idea, but it's kind of insulting to go so far breaking down certain countries and then lump portions of a whole continent into a couple options. Be consistent or don't go there at all. My two cents.

2013/09/24 at 18:04
Wow. Human females are beautiful.
2013/09/22 at 09:21
WOW, that is totally out of reality, the average Brazilian face is not that, she is definitely cute, but do not represent the average. Pretty much like the US, Brazil is a vast country with lots of immigration and racial mixing. In reality you see ALL of these types of faces in Brazil...there's not an average.
Dave Riley Robertson:
2013/09/23 at 03:15
The faces are composed of many different people layered together.. So yes it is the average.
2013/09/22 at 10:55
Serbian girls are the most beautiful! :))
2013/09/22 at 11:56
seriously? I'd say in the row of Serbian, Czech, Hungarian and Romanian are not as pretty girls as in other countries
2013/09/22 at 12:47
That is in the eye of the beholder isn't it?
I think the Ethopean woman have beautifull faces.
Somehow looking at the pictures of the (former) Eastern european countries I see POOR people in their faces. Don't know why but they look like they might not have had enough healthy food in growing up.
Could be a truth in that.
The wall only came down not all that too long ago.

Terence H. Winkless:

What's with you Canadians?
2013/09/23 at 06:53

All faces that have been grouped together have either shared borders or significant cross cultural similarities.
The only exception is Israel being grouped with Greece, Italy, and Spain instead of Lebanon, Iran And Turkey.
Now remember, these are faces of real humans not whether those countries' current governments get along or not.
Of the nearly 7 Million population of Israel, the population break down is:
Ashkenazi (lived in Europe after 7th Century C.E.): 2.8–4 million
Mizrahi (Remained in the Middle East and their original home): 3-3.2 million
Sephardim (originally Mizrahi but lived in the Iberian Peninsula until the Spanish inquisition): 1.1-1.5 million
Hence, with Mizrahi and Sephardim majority being more recently Middle Eastern, the grouping of Israel with
neighboring Lebanon, Turkey, and Iran would have been more appropriate and geographically accurate.
Clearly our cross cultural makeup is not the issue sadly it all bowels down to centuries of religious bigotry and conflicts : (
2013/09/22 at 21:48
John,That is exactly what I was pointing out that in a scientific study more relevant to genetic similarities introduction of detours dictated by religious, philosophical or political considerations is a discrediting element.
2013/09/25 at 14:50
Turkey has more genetic relations with balkans than middle east. Therefore it should be placed between Greece, Ukraine, and Italian than Lubenan. Dont get cofused with cultural smilarities...

These pictures are far more "beautiful" than normal because this is a different kind of "average". These pics are a median of different facial structures, and everything about these are "normal" or "in the middle of possible variation". The "average" regular person has some unique structure or deviation from this median, such as a longer nose or a bigger brow, or tiny ears, or profound cheeks, etc. and those irregularities are what we perceive as "unattractive" or "ugly". Also note that ALL of these pictures show unrealistically smooth skin. There's not a wrinkle, scar, mole, pitted skin, blackhead to be seen, because each of them individually is not "average" on every spot of skin and thus is not included in these images, but normally people have one or more of these somewhere on their face that contributes to unattractiveness.
These images are not a testament to "the beauty of the average person". Rather they show that we perceive lack of aberration as "preferred" or "beautiful".
Joyce Maust Enzor:
2013/09/22 at 14:01
No, it means that any 'racial' feature is beautiful in itself. The market of having noses changed, oriental eyes lifted etc is so sad. No one race is any more beautiful than another. All are beautiful and I wish our world would accept that.
